What is an NHS Health Check?
The NHS Health Check is a free health check-up for adults in England aged 40-74 years old that takes 20 minutes to complete. It’s designed to spot early risks of stroke, kidney disease, heart disease, type 2 diabetes or dementia. As we get older, we have a higher risk of developing one of these conditions. An NHS Health Check helps find ways to lower this risk.
Even if you are feeling well, it’s worth having your NHS Health Check now. Think of it as being your “midlife MOT” where we check that some of your body’s most important systems are running smoothly. Amongst other things, blood pressure, cholesterol and BMI will be checked and the results given to you.
We can then work with you to reduce your chance of developing these health problems in the future and provide personalised advice.
Why the NHS Health Check is important
Thousands of people have already had an NHS Health Check and are armed with information and support to reduce their risk of developing problems. Why not join them?
The health conditions picked up by the NHS Health Check are, when added together, the biggest cause of – preventable deaths – in the UK, with around 7 million people affected by them.
In its first five years, the NHS Health Check is estimated to have prevented 2,500 heart attacks or strokes and at least 300 premature deaths a year. This is the result of people receiving treatment after their Health Check.
The NHS Health Check finds that:
- for every 27 people, one person is diagnosed with high blood pressure
- for every 110 people, one person is diagnosed with type 2 diabetes
- for every 265 people, one person is diagnosed with kidney disease
If you wish to avoid being a statistic, then it’s worth making an appointment for an NHS Health Check as soon as you can.
